Gem Hoarding Part 2

Welcome back! This is the second half of the Gem Hoarding series. If you haven’t already, check out Part 1 for info on the Daily Challenge and King Pig Panic, Map, Clan Events, and the Tower of Fortune. Part 2 covered MEBC, Spells, Hatchling Events, Rowdy Rumble, and the Arena.
The Arena is a place to earn big rewards, even more so during Feather Frenzies, Black Pearl Parties, and Super Streak Weeks. Many times you can progress pretty far into the streak without using any gems. As you get closer to the end of a streak the chances of forking over some pink rock increases. Now, if one 60 gem buy in will finish off a streak it makes sense to spend the gems. If you need multiple buys ins just pass. Shake your fist at the game and start a new streak. Best way to avoid having to spend in the Arena is to bank your spells. Spells should be used for Clan Events and Arena, that’s all. Playing Arena one week on, one off, gives you a chance to bank spells and tickets when you are low or have run out. Top placements at the end of the week are a source of free gems.
Free spell cards are found everywhere. They are so frequent it’s almost annoying. Collect them! Watch all the free videos and bank them for later. If you run short on spells you can always play without them. Or, you can spend gems to purchase more, and they ain’t cheap. (Check out the Spells section in ab2playersguide.simdif.com for a breakdown of cost.) It seems silly to spend gems on something that can be found in abundance for free.
Frequent MEBC reruns can really add up quick. Most players don’t really need to ever spend gems for a rerun. If you are trying to complete a frame change or, are part of a really competitive clan, you may need to pay for the occasional rerun. Many of the more competitive clans have frame requirements. If you are struggling to keep up and are constantly paying for reruns it may be time to switch clans. You might not be quite there yet, and that’s ok, leave on good terms so you can return. Don’t keep spending just to hit frame requirements, it will create difficulties in other aspects of the game.
Frankly, I rarely spend gems for any sort of rerun. There are many places that allow you to pay for an immediate rerun; MEBC, Clan vs Clan Battles, Rowdy Rumble, and Hatchling Events. Hatchling Events don’t typically allow for reruns but it will allow you to pay to keep the run going.
Some runs cost 60 gems and others up to 200 gems! There are always situations that arise where it makes sense to spend the gems but, generally speaking, save your gems.
The days of big gem rewards in chests seem to have passed. While I enjoy a good Feather Frenzy or Black Pearl Party I have yet to experience the Glutenous Gem Grab! An event where all gem rewards are doubled. Remember, gifts from friends are doubled during FF and BPP events. Make sure you go in and out of the map to collect any you may have built up.
Anymore, the only places to find free gems (I’m using ‘free’ pretty loosely here) are chests, Tower of Fortune, Clan Events, and the Arena. If you decide to purchase gems look for the best offers, there are quite a few. Keep in mind, once you make an in-game purchase you lose the free video in the Tower of Fortune for 60-90 days. That clock restarts with every purchase. If you purchase the daily gem letter the clock starts the first day you no longer receive the letter.
Gem hoarding is all about patience. Having a large gem bank allows me to help the clan in events and still have some left over to get me out of trouble in the arena or during battle. Having a bank also allows me to buy that extra card or pay for the extra birds this one time because the rewards make sense and I have plenty of gems. My flock hasn’t grown as fast as it could, I also haven’t played near as much arena lately, but I never have to stress about having enough gems. And... I never have to spend money! The other good news is I can stop and start these practices as often as I want.

    Hello.
    Do you know the amount of gems we have to spend everytime there is a pig hidden under a ToF card?
    It is 20... 50 and?

      The amounts are: 20/50/100/200/400/800/1600/3200/" "/... tops out at 3200 (yeah...I'll probably never gemorrhage like that, either) but the key amounts the way I look at it are 170, 370, and 770 during exotic hat events that you have no hats for yet. At 770 you can find 5 pigs and watch the ad for the 6th as long as you have the ad option (saw somewhere that years ago players could spend like $10 to be able to open common chests every 15 minutes but they forfeited video options in ToF or game-wide or something). Of course some judgment needs to be made and it feels a LOT better to only drop 370 and get 5 hats, even from a gold ticket floor 20 start to get Chuck's, Bomb's, and Matilda's. I do believe the fast-forward gives you better odds to get to the hat floors and to get the hats themselves, you just kinda need to put up with some off days. Think of committing if you don't get a pig until floor 6 but remember that you're not losing much at that point - if anything - so if floor 7 is another pig then it's usually best to just watch the ad video and forget about the traumatic experience of having multiple pigs laugh in your face over their snotty nature. Oh, and for some reason you can play the ToF every 20 hours though I do believe you need to be close to the 24 hour mark to be able to watch the ad. It's a pain but just try to do it at the same time every day. If you're a little early or late it shouldn't affect you. One last thing: if you have the gems to buy off 4/5 and have a gold ticket you want to use then be absolutely sure that it's been ~24 hours or more. If an ad doesn't come up at first when you feel you should have one then wait up to several minutes if there's a lot riding on it, don't make brash decisions. Have fun!

MEBC: The Fly Over

Mighty Eagle runs a tight ship and expects you to play in Boot Camp daily. Those who do will be handsomely rewarded. Do not be intimidated! This is a great place to practice and earn free rewards. You only get one free run, so make the most of it. If you wish to make additional attempts it will cost you gems, currently 60 gems pre rerun. The goal is to clear as many rooms as you can while causing as much damage as possible until you run out of birds or rooms. There are a limited number of rooms but it is rare for a player to finish MEBC with birds left over. Each room cleared pays Mighty Eagle coins. Additionally, the higher your final score, the more Mighty Eagle coins you will earn when the days training is complete. Your daily placement on the Local Leaderboard pays if you place high enough, and your frame coins are tallied up and paid out at the end of the season. MEBC seasons vary between 40-48 days typically. When you play MEBC you compete against all players in the game.

Dummies Defined

One of the hot button issues in Angry Birds 2 is the use of dummies in clans. This poses the question, what is a dummy? The FaceBook advocacy group ‘No Dummies Allowed AB2’ defines a dummy as player accounts maintained at a low flock power solely for biasing Clan vs Clan matches. Dummy accounts are usually easy to spot. The main thing to look for is flock power, many times it’s below 65. A combination of white MEBC frames, Vanilla League, no hatchling, and a base level slingshot are also signs of dummy accounts. The dead giveaway is not having the whole flock unlocked. Some dummy accounts may only have three or four birds open. At this point you may be wondering how in the world such a small flock could give a clan any sort of advantage. Valid question! From what we can tell Rovio matches clans based on the number of players and the clan flock power. They didn’t fully account for the distribution of flock power within the clan.
